First, the Constitution, almost since its inception, has influenced the interactions between Federal and State Government and therefore between political parties in ‘power’ at either level. There is general understanding that our governing system does not work as well as it should; That it needs better alignment so we can stop the waste created by duplication. Yet, the political impasse simply comes from the word ‘Power’. If we change the status quo, many politicians and public servants lose power. The ego states of an ambitious person simply could not allow that! But is governing a nation about individuals’ ego states?
Secondly, Australia, as one of few nations, has only two major political parties. Yet, proliferation of political parties is immense… the Pirate Party, the Animal Rights Party, the Sex Party, etc... And each party defends a cause.
Is politics about a Cause? Are parties about a Cause? Or is their Cause to serve a Nation and its people?
Australia seems to me like a large ping pong table. Policies are the ball and the players are the major parties. Like a ball our policies are bounced from one side to the other. Is there an aim to this game, other than winning? What a waste of effort from the notion of disagreement because of a party cause!
Lastly, public servants are bounced around by new government through department changes, by new leaders with new norms, and by new uncertainties e.g. the ping pong game, jobs, and new ministerial egos. Every time government rebrands, restructures or readjusts more resources and energy is wasted. Where is the continuity for a nation, for its people, for business, for social justice, for its environment, for…?
Let’s agree on where our nation is heading. Let’s agree on economic, social and environmental facts and outcomes no matter how tough this discussion. Let’s agree that we need to take off the blinkers and look to a long term future. Let’s agree that we need to advocate for the cause of policy beneficial for this future! If we can agree that our short term focused, power driven and ping pong governance model is broken then let’s agree to fix it. If we can agree on that…we would be again the clever country and bound for a clever culture.
